01 — Shirakunoike Nature Walk

A guided walk along the mossy lakeside trail of Shirakunoike, set deep within the Unzen national park. Ancient trees, the quiet surface of a volcanic lake, and the still cool of a highland morning — guided in English, framing Unzen not just as a landscape but as a place with memory. The original foreign guests passed this trail more than a century ago. It is unchanged.

02 — Hilltop Tea Ceremony

A contemplative pause on the highlands — a bowl of tea, a view across the Unzen landscape, and the unhurried ritual of Japanese tea culture. The mountain itself becomes the garden. Conducted by a Japanese tea instructor, this is a quiet counterpoint to the walk: stillness framed by open sky and the faint scent of sulfur drifting up from the Jigoku below.

03 — Unzen Kanko Hotel & Period Pastimes

A visit to the Unzen Kanko Hotel — a handsome colonial-era wooden structure built in 1935 and still welcoming guests today. Guests tour the historic interior and engage in period pastimes: billiards, a golf course walk, and other leisure activities once enjoyed by the hotel's original international clientele.
